A minimum of 64 people died in a police operation cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives said. In excess of 80 people were detained.

Violent conflicts broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.

The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the police operation, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

State officials confirmed at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Residents have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement reported more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the raid, along with multiple guns.

Operation Background

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a extended probe.

Dozens of the suspects are considered participants in an organization from the northern region who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.

Broader Context

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in Brazil before important worldwide conferences in the nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is taking place in the city of Belem in the north in November.
