Anthony Barry Reveals His Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Today, he's dedicated to assist the England manager win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines started through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his purpose.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career included elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like top footballers. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour day and night, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their methods involve player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Driven Leaders

Barry describes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he states. “We seek to command the entire field and that’s what we spend most of our time to. We must not just to keep up of the trends but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We have to play a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in that period. It’s to take it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system enabling productivity in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play should represent all the positives of English football,” he comments. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a system that lets them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. While training for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into the most challenging environments available to him to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He earned his license with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those won over and he recruited the coach on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the team dismissed most of his staff except Barry.

His replacement with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he got Barry out from Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
