Explosion Claims 3 Law Enforcement Officers Amid Eviction Action in Italy

A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the property close to Verona to enforce an removal notice for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were arrested at the location and a third person who fled subsequent to the incident was located not long after. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location showed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the residence was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander told reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He believed the explosion had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
