Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Leader Departs After Shift Towards Fried Chicken.
The boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while diversifying the company into chicken products has been replaced after conflicts with its directors.
Leadership Transition
Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a long-term chief.
The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to pivot the UK's biggest pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, commenting recently there was not “huge potential” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He observed chicken was the quickest rising food category in the world.
Board Disagreements
Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the governance team over his strategy and business vision, although the company's announcement said he was departing “as a joint decision”.
Recent Brand Launch
In September, Domino's introduced its Chick 'N' Dip offering – which Rennie called a “significant new phase” for the company – and is testing it in over 200 locations in the north-west of England and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still going to roll it out across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as intended, it regards chicken products as complementary to its primary pizza operations.
Leadership Comment
Bull, the Domino's chair, said: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are focused on identifying the ideal CEO to lead the disciplined execution of that development approach.”
Market Difficulties
Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said transactions dipped by one and a half percent in the Q3. In the summer, it alerted that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the period before the government announcement and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.
Rival chains are also struggling. Another major chain disclosed the shutting of dozens of outlets a last month, after the company behind its UK venues fell into administration.
Health Efforts
Responding to market shifts towards balanced diets, the company has introduced light items, such as its thin-crust selection of pizzas below 400 calories as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly options. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the betting firm a well-known operator. It is thought that she prefers not to take on the top job permanently.
She commented: “The company has a several active development and operational projects that we will be dedicated to carrying out at a rapid rate.”
Frampton noted these involved further work on the company's procurement system and menu innovation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also lacking a long-term finance director until 16 March, when Andrea comes aboard from the drinks company C&C Group. Until then, Snow acts as temporary CFO.
