Edwards along with O'Neil represent the early candidates in the frame to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the team's ten-game winless start to the Premier League campaign.
And both candidates - both of who have historic links to the team - are part of the names to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they begin the search of appointing a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
