Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized team members for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The team went 4-11 in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
