The loved ones of young people unaccounted for after a tragic fire at a venue in a Swiss alpine town are enduring an agonising period of uncertainty for official news and requesting information about their family members via social media.

The blaze devastated the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Swiss Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Circulated images reveal the roof structure catching alight as beverages with sparklers are raised in celebration.

Emergency services have indicated that it could take considerable time to formally name the victims of the disaster, which killed numerous partygoers and hurt another 119. Officials noted on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been accounted for, with work still underway to locate the remaining few.
