The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is understood of his research, the case most likely held some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, which triggered the awakening of his powers—abilities he would later pass on to the kids under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
